Interview with Andrew Lichliter, MD:

What sets your study on radiation exposure apart from what is already in the literature?

Dr Lichliter: To our knowledge, it is the first study showing that an interventionalist can conduct a varied and radiation-intense practice with essentially negligible eye exposure using widely-available devices and methods.

Can you briefly describe your findings?

Dr Lichliter: An interventionalist performed 249 fluoroscopic procedures, including 3,690 minutes of fluoroscopy over 18 months, using Zero-Gravity™ and common radiation reduction methods. A Landauer radiation personnel monitoring badge worn next to the left eye yielded a lens dose equivalent of 7.33 mRem/year, or 9% above estimated background radiation excluding radon.

Tell me about something surprising you encountered while doing this research.

Dr Lichliter:  The annual occupational exposure limit to the lens of the eye is 7.5 times higher in United States than in Europe.

How might your findings affect clinical practice?

Dr Lichliter:  Surveys have shown that a large proportion of interventionalists wear monitoring badges inconsistently, or sometimes never. They might become more diligent about wearing and checking the results while trying things such as Zero-Gravity™, as well as exiting the area during power-injected acquisitions in order to reduce eye dose to near background.

What are your plans for further studies?

Dr Lichliter:  We are studying the effects of various other protections of the eyes, brain, and head, as well as looking carefully at the radiation transmitted through the lead and non-lead aprons, which are poorly represented by their labels.

What are you hoping that attendees take away from your presentation?

Dr Lichliter:  We hope attendees realize that they have the means to essentially eliminate the risk of radiation-induced cataracts without uncomfortable apparatus by using available devices and methods such as we use.
